Transcoding video to send it outside the house is the point where the hardware in the NAS really takes over for video. This will be especially true if you add 4K - you want your viewing devices to be able to do the work & not have the NAS trying to transcode or remux the video to fit the viewer. My TVs are still 720p & only the phones are higher resolution) If all your viewing devices are fairly recent models, most of the work should be done by them & the built in decoders the NAS will just feed the raw data across the network for them to process. (All my content is 720p with a few 1080p. Locally they all Direct Stream, so the NAS does very little actual work - minus the odd anime that has wonky encoded subtitles. I use Plex & have a DS720+ feeding into 2 Roku & 3 Android phones. R/plex is also a good place to ask, if that's the software you plan on using.
